  http://eladies.sina.com.cn/qg/p/2007/0203/1517390594.html

spill the beans

Spill the beans: To divulge a secret, especially to do so inadvertently or maliciously.

Origin

The derivation of this expression is sometimes said to be a voting system used in ancient Greece. The story goes that white beans indicated positive votes and black beans negative. Votes had to be unanimous, so if the collector 'spilled the beans' before the vote was complete and a black bean was seen, the vote was halted. That's plausible, but doesn't account for the fact that the phrase is first found in the early 20th century. It's probably best if we concentrate our search there and ignore ancient Greece.

'Spill' has been used as a verb with the meaning of 'divulge' or 'let out' since at least the 16th century. Edward Hellowes' Guevara's Familiar epistles, 1574, contains an example of that usage:

"Although it be a shame to spill it, I will not leaue to say that which... his friends haue said vnto me."

That 'let out' meaning was probably influenced by an earlier meaning of 'spill', i.e. 'kill' and the subsequent usage 'spill blood', which was in common use by the 14th century.

The earliest uses of 'spill the beans' come from the USA. The meaning of the phrase was then something like 'spoil the beans' or 'upset the applecart', which harks back to the supposed Greek knocking over of a bean container. The first example I can find is from The Stevens Point Journal, June 1908:

"Tawney, when he came to congress, wasn't welcomed within the big tent. He had to wait around on the outside. Then the blacksmith [Jim Tawney] got busy. He just walked off the reservation, taking enough insurgent Republicans with him to spill the beans for the big five."

Soon after that the phrase was used with the meaning of 'upset a previously stable situation by talking out of turn', which is close to how we use it today. That is cited in The Van Wert Daily Bulletin, October 1911:

"Finally Secretary Fisher, of the President's cabinet, who had just returned from a trip to Alaska, was called by Governor Stubbs to the front, and proceeded, as one writer says, to 'spill the beans'."

We have 'spill', meaning 'divulge', but why beans? Well, it could have been almost anything. In fact, there are several 'spill the' variants - 'spill the soup', 'spill your guts', or simply, just 'spill'.

happy as a clam

今天学了个短语,共享之。

As happy as a clam :Very happy and content.

Origin

An early version is 'as happy as a clam at high water'. Clams are free from the attentions of predators at high tide, so perhaps that's a reason to consider them happy then. The earliest known citation doesn't mention water though. That's in Harvardiana, 1834:

"That peculiar degree of satisfaction, usually denoted by the phrase 'as happy as a clam'."

John G. Saxe, the American writer best known for his poem The Blind Men and the Elephant, used the phrase in his Sonnet to a Clam, in the late 1840s:

Inglorious friend! most confident I am
Thy life is one of very little ease;
Albeit men mock thee with their similes,
And prate of being "happy as a clam!"
What though thy shell protects thy fragile head
From the sharp bailiffs of the briny sea?
Thy valves are, sure, no safety-valves to thee,
While rakes are free to desecrate thy bed,
And bear thee off, - as foemen take their spoil,
Far from thy friends and family to roam;
Forced, like a Hessian, from thy native home,
To meet destruction in a foreign broil!
Though thou art tender, yet thy humble bard
Declares, O clam! thy case is shocking hard!

时间过去了好久,这个短语并没有随着时间的消逝而渐渐的淡出,也衍生其他的说法。happy as a lark和happy as the day is long,当然了也可以在happy前面加上as,不过这个就是随个人喜好了。

求助

How do you know when you've passed an Elephant ?

7 Ways to Send HUGE Files

Gmail users can now send up to 20MB of attachments to each other. But we want more! Here are 7 awesome services that let you send files of more than 500MB.

One of the best known file delivery services, YouSendIt allows you to send up to a 100MB file without creating an account. Upon uploading a file to YouSendIt, an email is sent to the recipient, where they are given a link to download the file. The download is available for 7 days and includes advertising on the page. YouSendIt also offers a variety of premium accounts starting at $4.99/mo that allow you to send files up to 2GB, use more bandwidth, and remove the ads from your download pages.

With a 500MB limit, MegaUpload offers the most storage space we found for non-paying users to send files. The service functions in the same way as YouSendIt, with no account necessary to send a file. For users that sign up and subscribe to a monthly or annual plan, MegaUpload offers “unlimited” file size and downloads, faster download speeds, and less advertising (the advertising on the free download pages is pretty aggressive).

Perhaps the simplest of the file transfer services, zUpload offers you up to 500MB to share a single file. A unique URL is generated for each file and is available for 30 days. Unlike the other services, there are no user accounts or premium features at the moment. It appears zUpload is entirely advertiser supported.

DropSend allows you to send files up to 1GB with a premium account (starting at $5/mo). Meanwhile, their free account provides you with 250MB of storage and up to 5 sends per month. Unlike some of the other services, you do need to create an account in order to send a file. The company also offers a desktop client for both Windows and Mac.

Based in the UK, MailBigFile functions almost exactly the same as YouSendIt. Without registering, you can send up to a 100MB file, while a Pro Account ($20/yr) allows you up to 2GB. MailBigFile also claims unlimited bandwidth, but since they cap it at 25 downloads per month, there are indeed limits. The company also gets our vote for the best no frills Web 2.0 domain name :)

LeapFILE targets business and enterprise users with a focus on customized branding and security. The company’s main product – Enterprise Exchange – allows organizations to setup their own completely private labeled file exchange services. Additionally, LeapFILE offers a personal version called Basic Exchange that lets you send up to 1GB files starting at $14.95/mo.

MediaMax is focused on storage, but also offers the option to share your files with others. With a free account, you can store up to 25GB of files, but there’s a catch: you can only send files up to 10MB in size with a total transfer limit of 1GB/mo. For $4.95/month, you can send 1GB files, and for $9.95/month you can send files of any size.

Twitter?

How Long is the Ideal Blog Post?

The internet is changing the way we read information. No longer are we constrained by a physical medium - we don't have a fixed number of pages to fill, nor a certain column inch quotient to meet.

It's liberating for the writer, but intimidating at the same time - how do you know when to stop?

Too little and readers will be finished in the blink of an eye - and too many words could mean your audience is gone before the reach the final paragraph.

So how long is ideal?

Learning by example

Different blogs on different topics all call for a variety of post lengths, but this variance aside, the typical reader of blogs has a fixed (and unfortunately short) attention span. What we can do is look at the trends prevalent in the top of the Blogosphere - as I did with my previous post on Top Blog Trends.

Taking the Technorati Top 100 as my sample, eliminating those which aren't in the English language, and those which aren't identifiable as conventional blogs, I took an average word count of the 10 most recent posts on each blog.

Results

The graph above shows the distribution of the average word count - the shortest average was a terse 77 words, and the longest a snooze-inducing 1,449. The vast majority of posts were over 100 words and under 500.

If we group the posts into distinct strata, we can see a clearer indication of the distribution:

Essentially, the distribution is a normal curve with positive skew - with half of all blogs having an average of 100-249 words per post.

Consistently shorter posts are rare - usually limited to blogs devoted to non-written content (pictures, videos, audio etc.), and with celebrity gossip blogs having a tendency to be more concise - Perez Hilton, for example.

On the other end of the spectrum, there's a distinct jump in word length for some blogs - in these cases it's usually a transition between writing for entertainment to writing for reference. With the transition comes the ability to post much longer articles, without the fear of losing interest. The articles over at A List Apart are a good example of this.

Writing to a limit

So, this begs the question - should a blog post be written to fill a specific length to be considered 'ideal'?

Absolutely not. The lack of any kind of imposed limit in a blog post means that your point can be made in as many words as you could wish for - but there's a lot to be said for terse copywriting.

If your topic befits it, write in-depth 5,000 word articles. If you're aiming for a more leisurely (and entertaining) read, it may be worthwhile considering that most popular blogs have an average of 100-250 words per article.

If you can express your point in fewer words, your readers might just thank you for it.

Google变脸

  转载自Cnbeta

A Links in HTML documents W3C关于HTML文档A标记的说明,PageRank=9;

其实纯粹就是娱乐而已,有用的估计也就“G”、“Y”两字母了。当然由于各网站的PageRank、排名会有变化,当Google调整了网站排名后应该有少许改变。
